This is general information about a state program and about what this directory does not list. It is not medical advice, not legal advice, and not a decision about eligibility.
Respite for family caregivers
The New Jersey Division of Aging Services describes the Statewide Respite Care Program as a break for a family member or other caregiver from the daily care of a person who needs that care, including an older adult. The program is for the caregiver’s relief. This guide does not say whether a particular family should use it.
Short-term respite
The same page says the break may be for a short time, or only once in a while. Examples it gives include time for the caregiver to be away, to handle an emergency, or to take care of errands. Who the program is for, and any share of the cost, stay on that page. This guide does not decide either, and it does not list short-stay beds.
Read the program, including who it is for, on the Division of Aging Services Statewide Respite Care Program page. That page also publishes the Aging and Disability Resource Connection number, 1-877-222-3737, and says to call it to reach the program in your county. This guide does not repeat the income rules or any cost share. Those stay on the state page.
This directory has no respite roster
Respite is a service, not a license file this site imports. No listing here is tagged as an open respite bed. Some families also ask an adult day program, which is a Department of Health license for care during the day. Those licenses are listed. A license is not a promise that respite hours are open.
Licensed programs are in the adult day directory. Ask the program, and ask any residential community, whether they offer a break. This page does not rank them.
How to ask
- Open the Statewide Respite Care Program page before you apply. Who it is for, and any share of the cost, are written there.
- Call 1-877-222-3737, the Aging and Disability Resource Connection number that page publishes, and ask for the program in your county.
- If you are also looking at daytime care, use the adult day list and ask what a day includes. Do not treat a license as an opening.
- This page does not say whether a particular caregiver or care recipient qualifies.
For Medicaid and MLTSS, read the official NJ FamilyCare MLTSS page. This guide does not interpret eligibility or payment.
The Next Right Step is free for families. No facility, agency, or provider pays to be listed, ranked, or recommended, and we don't receive referral fees. If we ever accept a sponsor, that listing will be clearly labeled “Sponsored,” and this note will be updated.
Questions families ask
Does this directory list respite openings?
No. The public files this site uses do not publish a respite roster. The Statewide Respite Care Program page is the place to start, and adult day licenses are a separate list.
Does this page decide who qualifies?
No. Eligibility and any share of the cost are on the Division of Aging Services page. This guide does not decide either.
